Started in 1995, alternative terrain, is celebrating a decade of designing and building gardens in the Washington, D.C. metro area. alternative terrain works closely with our clients, listening to their needs and desires, to provide them with low maintenance backyard retreats to full blown dream gardens. We achieve this through a process of education and sharing of ideas.
alternative terrain is a design and build landscaping firm focusing on small to medium scale residential projects. We provide services to Montgomery, Prince Georges, and Howard counties in Maryland, Washington, D.C., as well as surrounding parts of the Washington metropolitan area.
alternative terrain focuses on our clients desires to create the landscape that fulfills their goals while working within their budget. We offer landscape design and consultation services for do-it-yourselfers and landscape master plans for new and newly acquired properties.
The scope of our design/build work projects include installation of mixed borders and plantings; native and wildlife habitats; ponds and water features; flagstone and paver patios; retaining walls constructed of dry stacked natural stone, segmental wall stone or timbers; and custom design sheds and wood fences. Other services include organic gardening, natural pruning, lawn restoration, large scale soil improvement and rototilling, establishment of vegetable gardens, and small loader-backhoe service. The latest addition to our work scope is the design and installation of garden railways. Brian, a long time HO modeler, has combined his love of trains and gardening and has moved into the outdoors. We can help you with all aspects of G gauge garden railroading.
Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, alternative terrain was founded in 1995 by Brian Donovan. Brian is head designer and frequent installation supervisor. Brian holds a B.S. from S.U.N.Y. at Albany and a M.S. from American University. He continues to supplement his education with additional coursework and seminars in horticulture, ornamental plants, landscape history, architecture and design as well as landscape construction, care and maintenance.
